Alaska was purchased on March 30, 1867 from Russia for $7.2 million, and it was signed by William Seward giving it the nickname "Seward's Folly" or Seward's mistake. Its the official name though, the official name is The Purchase of Alaska. Though, the cartoonist's mesage does not show that Seward made a mistake but somthing else. This cartoon is showing that Alaska is large and has many unknown things since it just came in. On the other hand, some other people may think that Alaska is a folly because some may think its worthless and has no value. Early when it was purchased, it was thought it was just a big place of ice. The techniques that is used by this cartoonists is labeling which is clear with the bigger man labled Alaska and the other smaller man Texas. Another technique used is symbolism becasue the larger man symbolizes the larger state Alaska and the smaller man is the smaller state of Texas. I believe this cartoons supports my position on American Impearlism, which is that its a bad thing, because we now have this large place that we have no idea to do with. Some may think though that it expands our territroy further givving us more power, but I believe power is not essential. What side do you support for the Purchase of Alaska, it was a good choice, or bad choice.
