In January17, 1893, the United States took Hawaii forcefully and annxed it, or add to an exisiting territory, after Queen Liliuokalani try to get rid of American sugar planters. The cartoonists shows this in this politcal cartoon with Uncle Sam and The Queen of Hawaii fighting over controll over the "Sugar See-Saw" or controll over Hawaii. This cartoonist's message is that Uncle Same has an unfair advantage having more support and having a heavier advantage, or military stregnth. It also shows that its not just about expanding territory, its also about sugar and new markets with the sugar barrel being the main foundation of the see-saw. Though, other people may have different opinions than the U.S. took over Hawaii unfairly, they may think that Hawaii was taken over fairly because the war was won by America. They think beacause we won the war with Hawaii, we earn the territory fairly. Techniques used in this cartoon is labeling with the Sugar and the governer being labeled to show they are and what they represent. Symbolism is also used because the see-saw represents controll over Hawaii and the sugar market. This supports my perspective on American Impearlism because it shows America taking controll over other countries that are weaker and expand influence over them. Others may think this goes against my opinion because it shows having more power with new territory. What side do you take, the annexation was a good thing, or a bad thing.
